HOME CARE. WERE CO ID SAFE NURSING 1300 660 636 The Aged Care Story This is typical scenario of the elderly being overwhelmed, not understanding the implications of their options or the complexity of the different services that are offered through the Government's Commonwealth Help Support and Home Care Packages. On a visit to a couple in Port Stephens recently who were receiving the Commonwealth Home Support Package (CHSP) we found their situation heartbreaking, meeting the elderly face to face definitely puts a different perspective on how some elderly people are confused by the system. This does not account for the elderly's lack of computer skills or the ability to understand the terminoklogy when discussing their situation with the relevant department. When navigating the system there is a tendency to direct enquiries to Commonwealth Home Support and whilst this is well meaning, it does not explain that there is a lack of providers with the necessary funding and that there is numerous providers for varied services, unlike a Home Care Package (HCP) where services are managed by one entity offering a broad range of services. Regarding CHSP it was identified that out of the eleven providers who service postcode 2324 (including Tea Gardens and Karuah) seven were not available and the other four were mainly based in Sydney and as far as Port Macquarie, so essentially the area is poorly serviced which adds to the angst and frustration and the reason why people simply give up. Case in example, Mrs P has a heart and lung condition, a wound on her heel that has been there for over 12 months and being frail, has to use a walker to move around the house and more recently after a visit to her optometrist and GP, it was found that due to her lack of sight in one eye, the condition was caused by shingles. The couple are currently receiving a cleaning service with a CHSP provider but as Mr P also has advanced health issues and he cannot leave Mrs P unsupervised even for basic shopping, he has tried to contact other CHSP providers for help but has either got no answer or been told that they do not service the area. It comes down to the fact that whilst we are trying to keep our elderly loved ones safe in their own home, they still need the extra helping hand to give them the respect they deserve to live a fruitful and happy life.
