ADVERTISEMENT Port Stephens says no to PEP11 The Future of the PEP11 Petroleum Exploration Permit is solely in the hands of the Morrison Government. If renewed, PEP11 could see oil or gas rigs erected in the coastal waters off our beautiful Port Stephens coast. Last week Meryi Swanson MP, Member for Paterson hosted Leader of the opposition, Anthony Albanese, in a visit to Nelson Bay to hold a round table done differently. Mr Albanese and Ms Swanson hosted several key local stakeholders across the tourism, hospitality, and fishing industries to discuss the threat of PEP11 to local marine habitat and the consequences this would have on local jobs. The forum was held on the boat of a local tourism operator so Mr Albanese could see firsthand how this would impact on the local coastline. Local tourism stakeholders discussed the dangers of PEP11 and the importance of protecting our regions environment and tourism economy. "Federal Labor stands on the side of coastal communities, who have waged a strong community-lead campaign against the permit." Mr Albanese said. "If this approval was to pass, we could see the loss of thousands of local jobs and significant environmental degradation," Ms Swanson said. "The facts are simple; PEP11 offers no new jobs for locals and, indeed, poses a threat to thousands of existing jobs in tourism, fishing, and hospitality." "I would encourage the community to join me in demanding that the Federal Minister for Resources, Keith Pitt, listens to his state government counterparts, the strong message from our communities and the local representatives across the political spectrum, in calling for this permit to be denied." As many locals know, our coastline is home to a rich ecosystem of sea life and is the host of a magnificent annual whale migration. "PEP11 would allow the degradation of vital marine habitat and threaten our delicate ecosystem in its entirety," Ms Swanson said. "The Prime Minister hasn't put a stop to PEP11. He is just trying to be Mr Albanese committed that an Albanese Labor Government would never support PEP11.
